Georgia’s Voice, a charity dedicated to preventing suicide and supporting young women aged 18-25 in Cornwall, has launched its new hub, Chy at the Village, in Redruth. The hub, located within the Village Kitchen at the Gateway Business Centre, Barncoose, offers a safe and welcoming space for young women to connect, find support, and access various resources.
The official opening on Saturday, January 18th, marked a significant milestone for the charity, which has been making waves with its vital work across Cornwall. The event saw a steady stream of visitors keen to learn more about the services offered at Chy at the Village. The launch was further highlighted by coverage on both BBC Spotlight and ITV News West Country, bringing the charity’s crucial work to a wider audience.
“We believe it takes a village – to support one another and share our stories,” says Sophie Alway, founder of Georgia’s Voice. “We wanted to create a safe space for women to come together and to spread the message that no woman should struggle alone. Georgia’s Voice is our village – a place where all young women are welcome.”
Chy at the Village provides a range of free services, including drop-in sessions where young women can access internet and laptop facilities, relax and watch TV, enjoy refreshments, engage in arts and crafts, or simply chat with peer support workers and volunteers. The hub also offers a co-working space for those wishing to work on personal projects and even has shower facilities available.
Beyond the drop-in sessions, Chy at the Village hosts a variety of workshops, details of which can be found on the Georgia’s Voice website. These workshops cover a range of topics relevant to young women’s mental health and wellbeing.
The hub is staffed by a dedicated team of volunteers, each bringing their own unique experiences and skills to the role. From peer support workers who understand the challenges of mental health struggles to individuals with backgrounds in counselling, education, and the arts, the team is passionate about creating a supportive and non-judgmental environment.
Ciara, a volunteer at Chy at the Village, expressed her excitement about the new space, saying, “It’s a really beautiful space so please come along and spend some time with us or use the space to have some quiet time for yourself. I love a cuppa and a chat so feel free to grab me if you fancy one too.”
Georgia’s Voice also offers a monthly online support group for those unable to attend in person. These sessions, facilitated by Charlotte, provide a safe space for young women to talk, listen, or simply be present. The charity’s work extends beyond the hub, with support groups operating in various locations across Cornwall. Georgia’s Voice also runs a pre-loved boutique in Falmouth, with proceeds contributing to the charity’s vital services. They are also the chosen Charity of the Year for 2025 for several local businesses, highlighting the community’s support for their mission.
