PREVENTING SUICIDE IN YOUNG WOMEN AGED 18-25 IN CORNWALL

Georgia’s Voice
Georgia’s Voice is a suicide prevention charity offering emotional support to young women with mental health concerns, aged 18-25 years old in Cornwall. The charity was founded by Sophie Alway in memory of her 19 year old daughter Georgia Gallaway who took her own life during the first lockdown in 2020.
In the last two years Georgia’s Voice has trained a team of volunteer Facilitators who hold free weekly support groups, currently covering 1/3 of Cornwall and have one online support group to reach those unable to get to a face to face meeting. The sessions offer a safe, confidential space for young women to talk, listen or just ‘be’ in a non-judgemental environment, to receive emotional support using a variety of methods.
We strive to empower our young women to feel confident and capable in managing their mental health.
Georgia’s Voice helps with signposting to professional mental health services and can provide and pay for talking therapy. In addition, we provide wellbeing activities that promote good mental health, build relationships and grow confidence. Activities include volunteering, fundraising events and other recreational activities such as sailing, yoga and climbing.

Suicide is currently the leading cause of death in young people under twenty-six. According to the Office of National Statistics, Females aged 24 years or under have seen the largest increase in the suicide rate since their time series began in 1981.
