The historic stones of Royal William Yard’s Brewhouse are home to a fresh aroma this week. Nestled within Arcade—the Yard’s burgeoning independent hub—DockSide Coffee Bar officially opens its doors this Saturday, December 20, marking the debut of Plymouth’s newest waterfront retreat.
At the helm is 21-year-old Millie Reynolds, an entrepreneur whose age belies a decade of dedication. Having started her journey in hospitality at just 13, Millie has spent the last seven years honing a vision for a space that feels less like a commercial unit and more like a “safe space” for the community.
From the Midlands to the Marina
Originally hailing from the Midlands, Millie’s path to the South West was driven by a love for the coast. After moving to Devon two years ago, it was the sense of connection found in local pubs and cafes that inspired her to strike out on her own.
“I saw how a welcoming venue could become the heart of a community,” Millie explains. “I want DockSide to be somewhere people can come on their own or with loved ones, whether that’s to chill, study, or just take a moment for themselves.”
A Masterclass in “Cosy”
The interior of DockSide is a deliberate blend of the building’s industrial heritage and modern warmth. Visitors can expect:
- Aesthetic: Layered wood tones, soft lighting, and blue accents that mirror the nearby water.
- The Layout: A versatile space seating 18–20, featuring communal round tables for socialising, high-top stools for workers, and plush leather armchairs for those looking to disappear into a book.
- Pet-Friendly Perks: Furry friends are more than welcome, with blankets and water bowls at the ready.
Local Flavors, Unique Blends
Quality is at the core of the menu. Millie has partnered with The Coffee Company in Newton Abbot to serve their unique Monsoon blend. In a fascinating natural process, these Brazilian beans are left outdoors to absorb rainfall, resulting in a smooth, aromatic cup that stands out from the standard high-street fare.
The food follows the same “shop local” ethos:
- Baking: Cakes are delivered fresh from Buns and Crumbs in Kingsbridge and Salcombe.
- Savouries: Expect filled croissants, granola pots, and fresh-blend smoothies.
- Community First: In a nod to her new neighbors, local residents enjoy a 10% discount on their orders.
The Growing Spirit of Arcade
DockSide joins Nala’s Pet Co. and Pebble boutique as the third resident of Arcade. The initiative, designed to help small businesses launch quickly with flexible licenses, is transforming the Grade I listed Brewhouse into a destination for those who prefer “independent” over “international.”
For Millie, the journey from a 13-year-old glass collector to a 21-year-old business owner is a dream realized. “I’m raring to get the doors open,” she says. “I’m excited to make people’s days, one coffee at a time.”
